Oboe
Oboist Ian Davidson is Regents’ and University Distinguished Professor at Texas State University. He holds degrees from DePauw University and The University of Texas. In addition to his work at Texas State, Dr. Davidson is Principal Oboe of the Austin Opera Orchestra and English Horn and Associate Principal Oboe of the Austin Symphony Orchestra.
An active performer, has performed solo and chamber music concerts in such prestigious venues as Rachmaninoff Hall in Moscow, Chueng Theater in Hong Hong, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, Belozersky Palace in St. Petersburg, and the Sydney Opera House, as part of 51 international concert tours.
His recording credits include 22 solo albums and numerous films, including “Spy Kids2”, “Knight of Cups”, “The Vessel”, “To The Wonder”, and recently, for HBO Films, the documentary “Simple as Water” that was short-listed for an Academy Award in the category of Best Documentary.
Dr. Davidson performs and records exclusively on oboes manufactured by F. Loree of Paris. His compositions, most recently “Scenes at The Ranch” and “Five Works of Jackson Pollock”, are published by in the US by TrevoMusic, in the UK by Emmerson Wind Music, and in Germany by Accolade.

About the Program:
The Artisan String Quartet and Oboists Ian Davidson kick off the 2026-2027 Classical Sound Concert Series with a pair of the most beloved Chamber Music pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart’s Oboe Quartet K. 370, and the String Quartet K. 465, the “Dissonance,” are iconic works from the pen of the beloved composer.
We are especially proud to feature a fantastic contemporary composition by Brazilian-American composer, and 2024 KMFA Composer In Residence, Clarice Assad. Ms. Assad’s “Canções da America” is an emotionally and rhythmically compelling celebration of South American dance and song-like forms.
A powerful communicator renowned for her musical scope and versatility, Brazilian-American Clarice Assad is a significant artistic voice in the classical, world music, pop, and jazz genres. The Grammy Award–nominated composer, celebrated pianist, inventive vocalist, and educator is acclaimed for her evocative colors, rich textures, and diverse stylistic range. With her talent sought-after by artists and organizations worldwide, the polyglot musician continues to attract new audiences both onstage and off.

Clarice on “Canções da America”:
“For the first time as a composer, I explore the music of neighboring Brazilian countries – my original homeland – including Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina. The latter was the homeland of composer Claudia Montero, whose passing in early 2021 inspired me to write this work. Montero was an accomplished musician who dedicated her life to creating beautiful pieces of music sparked by Latin American themes. She supported numerous projects to amplify women’s voices in music, and her body of works reinforces the importance of female composers’ voices in today’s world. Canções da America is dedicated to her legacy, and Fry Street Quartet who commissioned the work in 2022.”
