87501
Private Concert:
Monday, June 12, 2023 Sunset Salon Concert at a private home in Santa Fe featuring the Artisan String
Quartet for a Classical Sound Patron and her guests.
The concert at The New Mexico Museum of Art is entitled “Haydn & Beethoven” to highlight the unique
personal relationship between these two all-time great composers. This exciting program will feature the
1 st string quartet from the Opus 74 set of three revolutionary quartets Joseph Haydn composed upon his
return home from an extended trip to London. Paired with Opus 74 No. 1, is the rarely performed
masterpiece by Ludwig van Beethoven, the Opus 29 Viola Quintet nicknamed “Storm.” Beethoven’s first
job as a musician was as an 18-year-old violist in his hometown opera orchestra, and he was truly
inspired a few years later when composing Opus 29 for String Quartet plus a 2 nd violist. Between these
two great works on the program, is the charming and delightful brief string quartet by Hugo Wolfe, the
“Italian Serenade.” Wolfe is much more known for vocal compositions, but this sassy piece captures the
atmosphere of an outing in the beautiful Italian countryside.
Featured performers are the Artisan String Quartet, Patrice Calixte and Mariama Alcântara, violins, Bruce
Williams, viola, and Douglas Harvey, cello; most of them are principal players in the Austin Symphony
Orchestra. The Artisans welcome two Guest Artists. Santa Fe’s own Stephen Redfield will play the
second violin part for the entire concert, and Los Angeles resident Suzanna Giordano-Gignac performs
the second viola part on the Beethoven Quintet.
